About the Past in the Present: a Lecture by Serhii Plokhy for Students of DNU

On September 15, a meeting was held between the famous graduate of Dnipro National University named after Oles Honchar, the world-renowned scientist, professor of Harvard University, doctor of historical sciences Serhii Plokhy, with students and teachers of his alma mater.

Serhii Plokhy is a Ukrainian and American scientist – one of the leading specialists in the history of Ukraine and Eastern Europe. 17 years of his life were connected with our university, where he studied and worked. After graduating from the Department of History of Ukraine, during 1983-1992 he worked at the Department of World History, having gone from a teacher to the head of the department.

So, at his native faculty, he was gladly welcomed by the dean, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor Dmytro Arkhireyskyi, and the current head of the Department of World History, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor Albert Wenger. Having visited the university, Serhii Plokhy emphasized that he is overcome by nostalgia – bright and positive from the fact that Alma mater is changing for the better.

At DNU Serhii Plokhy is not on a visit, but at home, where he is inspired by a spiritual, especially intellectual atmosphere.

Not only the team of teachers, graduates and students of the Faculty of History gathered to meet with an outstanding colleague who raised the profession of historian so high and worthily carries it in Ukraine and beyond. The discussion, moderated by Albert Wenger, took place in the form of an open dialogue – in a sincere conversation, where everyone could ask their questions.

It should be noted that by the end of the academic year, the historical faculty, with the support of Serhii Plokhy, will hold a competition of scientific student works.
