Practical Psychology in Action: Masterclasses by an American Specialist

Students of the Faculty of Psychology and Special Education of Oles Honchar Dnipro National University meet a distinguished guest – a psychotherapist from the USA – an activist with international and intercultural experience, Ryan Capozzi. For DNU psychology students, the American specialist has prepared his own educational and practical initiative – a series of trainings dedicated to basic and modern approaches in psychotherapy.

Several offline meetings with Ryan have already taken place, organized by the efforts of the DNU Student Psychological Service.

Ryan Capozzi is a practicing psychotherapist. He received his Master of Science (MSc) degree in Client-Centered Therapy from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. He also has basic training in existential psychotherapy and narrative exposure therapy. He previously received a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in International Politics.

Ryan Capozzi’s main activity as a specialist is the organization of mutual aid initiatives (Solidarity Minded, Horyzont), which provide free psychotherapy, mental health support, educational and creative workshops in regions experiencing crisis. Thus, in recent years, Ryan has worked in various corners of the world, where people face isolation, poverty and traumatic events. Namely, he provided free therapy within the framework of various local projects and initiatives in Lebanon, Iraq (Kurdistan) and Ukraine.

During interactive master classes with his future colleagues – psychology students from Dnipro – the specialist has already managed to discuss the topics of the personal path of becoming a psychotherapist and extra-therapeutic factors influencing the client, analyze personality-oriented therapy and its meaning (trust, contact, recognition of the client’s value), as well as conduct practical training on cases of PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and trauma.

Such meetings with an American colleague really resonated with our Dnipro students. Therefore, the Student Psychological Service of DNU joined this educational and practical initiative under the leadership of Ryan Capozzi. A new educational and practical group is currently being launched for psychology students, volunteers and everyone interested in supporting mental health.
