The EU Ambassador in Ukraine: "We will increase opportunities for academic exchanges for Ukrainian students"

The representatives of the European Union delegation in Ukraine headed by the Ambassador of the EU have visited Oles Honchar Dnipro National University.

The head of the EU delegation in Ukraine took part in open discussion with scientists, lecturers and students of university. Hugues Mingarelli claimed that he was impressed by educational potential of our region. He shared his impressions: "It's an honor to be here for me today – in the biggest university of Dnipro city, where there are about 13 000 extremely intelligent young people. Generally, during two-day stay in Dnipro I was especially surprised by the number of local educational establishments, scientific institutions and innovation centers".

He emphasized the main goal of his visit: “First of all, this is an expression of our solidarity with the people of this region who are fighting for the integrity and sovereignty of the state. Ukraine for the European Union is a priority country. Now, when there is difficult time in Ukraine, I want to say: you are not alone in the war for independence, we stand with you".

In particular, Hugues Mingarelli explained that state members of the European Union want to help to realize the modernization in political and economic fields of our country. First and foremost, it is possible due to spread of European experience of the formation of a democratic society, fight against corruption, reform of the legal system, promoting, human rights, media.

The Ambassador stressed: "We note the successful government initiatives undertaken in your country in the last three years. For our part, we plan to continue supporting programs of public administration and decentralization reforming, to provide investment for the development of Ukrainian macroeconomic market, the energy sector. In the long term cooperation we are intending to support the regional business, to help internally displaced persons. Ukraine for Europe is a strategic partner, so we have lots of ways to help your country in this difficult time".

Hugues Mingarelli answered the student’s questions of different departments: social sciences and international relations, systems and mass media, international economics, historical and chemical ones. He admitted the lack of programs for international students exchange for such number of educated young people.

Hugues Mingarelli said: "Ukrainian students and scholars are of great interest for the European Union. Perhaps we really need to do more in the direction of academic exchanges for you: in order to create new opportunities and to distribute information about them. Because now there are a lot of fantastic young people who posses valuable qualities, who tend to upgrade their home country, bringing new views and approaches for the democratic development of their homeland. I believe, our new educational and scientific programs, will be one of nice ways to promote these ideas".

The other issues, which students were interested in, became the personal diplomatic experience of the guest in countries that were suffering from armed conflicts, his attitude to Brexit, as well as various aspects of Ukraine’s Euro integration.

It is notable, the Ambassador held a formal meeting with the leadership of DNU. In particular, with Mykola Polyakov, the rector of DNU, who told the guests about many years of Dnipor National University experience with higher educational establishments and scientific institutions of the European Union, with Mykhailo Dyachenko, vice-rector of scientific and pedagogical work in international cooperation field, with Volodymyr Karplyuk, vice-rector of scientific work, with Olexander Petrenko, the dean of the Physics and Technology Department.
