The Head of the department is Pristayko Tamara Stepanovna, Doctor of Sciences (Philology), Full Professor, Honoured teacher of DNU.

The department staff includes 10 lecturers, 2 Full Professors, 7 Professor Assistants, PhD (Philology), 1 Senior Teacher without scientific degree.

The Department of General and Slavic linguistics is one of the oldest departments of the university, founded in 1918 at historical and philological faculty of Dnepropetrovsk University.

The department prepares philologists-specialists in the Russian philology of educational levels "Bachelor", "Master" and educational-qualifying level "Specialist", prepares scientific and scientific and pedagogical staff through postgraduate study and doctoral studies.

The basic subjects in the curriculum are Contemporary Russian (including Stylistics and Speech Culture), Introduction into Linguistics, Introduction into Slavic Philology, Russian Dialectology, Russian History, Old Slavic Language, the Methods of Teaching Russian.

«Center of Slavic languages» and laboratory of applied linguistics function at the department.

The department graduates can work at educational institutions of all levels, mass media (newspaper, radio, television), tourist and advertising agencies, be engaged in translational activity.

Problems and directions of the department scientific researches at present are connected with the theme «Laws of Contemporary Slavic Languages Development and Functioning».

The Bulletin of Dnipropetrovsk University «Linguistics» is edited and published at the department, confirmed as the specialized edition.

Since 2003 the biennial International scientific conference «Lexical and grammatical innovations in modern Slavic languages» has been the scientific trademark of the department.

The scientists of the department constantly support creative contacts to scientists-Slavists in Slovakia, Bulgaria, Poland, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and the People’s Republic of China.

Students scientific societies «Language World Picture» and «Linguistic Studios» function at the department. Under the scientific supervision of the department scientists the students annually participate in All-Ukrainian competition of students’ scientific papers on Slavic languages, All-Ukrainian Olympiad on Russian, deliver reports at scientific conferences, publish scientific articles in journals at DNU and other higher schools.

The students of supervised groups actively participate in the cultural life of faculty and university, holding the Day of the first-year student, students’ self-management.
