The Research Institute of Energy-Efficient Technologies and Materials Science (RI EETMS) is a subdivision of the Research Division of Oles Honchar Dnipro National University, specializing in the development of new functional materials and technologies for the energy, electronics, and space industries.
It comprises 3 research laboratories:
- Rocket and Space Technology Research Laboratory
- Research Laboratory for Reliability Issues of Technical Devices in Renewable Energy Sources
- Research Laboratory of the Physics of Active Dielectric Crystals
Fundamental and Applied Research at the Laboratories of the Institute of Energy-Efficient Technologies and Materials Science
Fundamental and applied research conducted at the laboratories of the Institute of Energy-Efficient Technologies and Materials Science (IETMS) focuses on:• the development of electric propulsion systems;
• the development of space transportation systems for the collection and removal of space debris from low Earth orbit;
• the modernization and improvement of the energy efficiency of buildings and energy supply systems through the use of alternative energy sources;
• the development of protection systems for solar cells against thermal and electrical overloads based on polymer nanocomposite materials;
• the development and comprehensive study of the structure and properties of functional materials for defense and civilian applications.
The IETMS team brings together highly qualified researchers, engineers, and technical specialists who collaborate with leading research centers worldwide and actively participate in international research projects and conferences. The Institute conducts research in cooperation with leading Ukrainian institutions and researchers, including scientists from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (Dr. S.H. Nedilko); Uzhhorod National University (Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Yu. M. Vysochanskyi, Prof. O.O. Hrabar); Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (Prof. S. O. Sveleba); the Institute of Physical Optics (Prof. R.O. Vlokh); the Institute for Problems of Materials Science of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine M.D. Hlynchuk, Dr. Ye.A. Yeliseiev, Senior Researcher L.P. Yurchenko); and the Institute of Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (Prof. A.M. Morozovska).
In 2024, researchers from the Research Laboratory of the Physics of Active Dielectric Crystals – M.D. Volnyanskyi, A.O. Diachenko, and M.M. Koptiev – joined a consortium of researchers from the Institute for Problems of Materials Science and the Institute of Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and were successful in the National Research Foundation of Ukraine competition with the project “Silicon-Compatible Ferroelectric Nanocomposites for Electronics and Sensor Technology”. The project is supervised by Dr. Ye.A. Yeliseiev, Head of Department.
The project focuses on the investigation of advanced nanocomposites using state-of-the-art equipment available at the participating institutes and the Center for Collective Use of Scientific Equipment (CCUSE).

International Research Cooperation
Over the past five years, cooperation between researchers of the IETMS and the European research community has expanded significantly, contributing to the development of education and research at the University.From 2020 to 2024, joint research was conducted on lead-free NBT ceramics (Prof. Yan Sukhanich), along with the training of Master's students in the fields of 104 Physics and Astronomy and 105 Applied Physics and Nanomaterials (specialization: “Functional Materials”) within Double Degree Programs implemented jointly with the Pedagogical University of Krakow (Poland) and the University of Koblenz-Landau (Germany).
In total, 35 Master's students completed these Double Degree Programs and received degrees from both DNU and the respective partner universities.
Active cooperation has also been maintained with researchers from the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences, including Prof. M. Nikl and Dr. V. Laguta, focusing on the comprehensive investigation of the properties of lead molybdate acousto-optic crystals and solid electrolytes based on lithium–sodium germanates.
In 2025, with the support of the international Neutrons and Photons Elevating Worldwide Science (NEPHEWS) program, researchers M. P. Trubitsyn, A. O. Diachenko, and M. M. Koptiev, together with their colleague Dr. V. Ryuhtin from the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences, investigated the structure of lithium–sodium germanates using neutron scattering methods. The study established a relationship between the structure and properties of these materials.
In 2026, the ERASMUS+ “Mobility of Higher Education Students and Staff” program was launched under an international cooperation agreement between Oles Honchar Dnipro National University and Charles University in Prague. The program provides opportunities for new research projects and research placements for Institute staff at the Department of Materials Physics of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University. The program is coordinated by Prof. Roman Grill and Dr. Daria Drozdenko.
Implementation of Research and Technological Developments
The Institute of Energy-Efficient Technologies and Materials Science actively implements its research and technological developments in industrial practice, contributing to the competitiveness of Ukrainian industry and the development of the country's scientific and technological potential.Between 2021 and 2025, the Institute carried out 11 publicly funded research projects and 15 contract-based research projects, obtained 8 intellectual property rights documents, and filed 2 patent applications.
Within the framework of contract-based research, the Institute continues to develop cooperation with Ukrainian enterprises operating in the field of high-precision instrumentation.
