Research Activities

The department staff conduct research within the framework of the research project "Current Issues of the English-Language Worldview: Linguacultural, Multilingual, Discursive, Conceptual Aspects" (State Registration Number: 0125U002095, Registration Date: April 10, 2025).

The research interests of the department staff cover structural and cognitive linguistics, functional-semantic grammar, pragmatics, semantics, the history of the English language, rhetoric, poetics, discourse analysis, lexicology, linguistic stylistics, translation studies, intercultural communication, and culturological aspects of foreign language teaching.

Research results are published in professional journals, including those indexed in Scopus and Web of Science, as well as in the collection of scientific papers " English and American Studies" (published since 2004 and included in the Index Copernicus and Google Scholar scientific databases: anglistika.dp.ua).

An important platform for professional discussion is the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Actual Issues of Philological Science and Pedagogical Practice". The 10th conference was held in 2024 with the participation of scholars from the USA, France, Great Britain, Germany, and other countries. The 11th conference is scheduled for November 26–27, 2026.

The department staff work diligently to improve the quality of training for future specialists. Leading instructors propose an extremely broad and under-researched range of topics for term papers and Master's qualification theses, as well as for qualification theses for the doctoral degree (Doctor of Philosophy), the relevance of which is driven by general development trends in modern linguistics.

The department supports student research work. Instructors supervise term papers and qualification research, and students annually present their findings at the final scientific and practical conference and publish abstracts in the collection "Philological Sciences." The conference topics cover a wide range of issues in the field of philology, particularly in linguistics and language studies, literary studies, translation studies, and language teaching methodology.

In 2002, the Educational Laboratory of Modern Foreign Language Teaching Technologies was established under the Department of English Philology. Together with the department, it cooperates with various educational institutions interested in training and professional development for English language teachers.

The department operates student research clubs and problem groups focusing on lexicology, cognitive linguistics, grammar, translation, stylistics, teaching methodology, and the digitalization and gamification of the educational process.

The Department of English Philology has a postgraduate study program in specialty B11 Philology. Two third-level education seekers are currently working on their dissertation research:

  1. Demchenko Mykola Olehovych (topic: "Linguastylistic Features of the Fantasy Genre in Terry Pratchett's Short Prose," scientific supervisor Assoc. Yashkina V.V.).
  2. Pastukh Inna Vitaliivna (topic: "Communicative and Pragmatic Features of English-Language Social Advertising as a Creolized Text," scientific supervisor Assoc. Safonova N.A.).

Shakespearean Initiatives

The department regularly participates in scientific and educational events within the framework of "Shakespeare Days in Ukraine." In 2026, jointly with the Ukrainian Shakespeare Centre, it held a round table titled "Rewriting Shakespeare Across Cultures: The Hogarth Shakespeare Project as a Modern Intercultural Reinterpretation of the Canon," moderated by Associate Professor Iryna Bezrodnykh. As part of "Shakespeare Days in Ukraine – 2026," her open lecture titled "Desire, more sharp than filed steel…: Shakespearean Erotic Discourse and Theatrical Representations of Desire (Queer and Homoerotic Dimensions)" also took place.

Achievements of Students of the Department of English Philology

Student Sofiia Blonska (UA-23-1) received a personal scholarship from the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in the 2025–2026 academic year, and in September 2026 she received a scholarship from the President of Ukraine. Student S. Lutsenko received the M.S. Hrushevsky Academic Scholarship during her second year of study, and student K. Bilous received a scholarship from the President of Ukraine in the 2023–2024 academic year.

In 2025, students of the Department of English Philology Anna Rumiantseva (UA-22-2) and Polina Yeroshenko (UA-24-1), under the supervision of Associate Professor of the Department Iryna Bezrodnykh, joined the international cultural and educational project *"Voices of the Front: Ukrainian Military Poetry in English"*, implemented in cooperation with Dartmouth College (USA) and the T.G. The students worked on English-language translations of poetry by Ukrainian military personnel and presented the results of their joint work during a literary presentation evening at Dartmouth College.

In 2025, an agreement on national academic mobility was concluded between Oles Honchar Dnipro National University and the Dnipro State Technical University. Within the framework of this agreement, students S. Blonska and V. Kutsenko will study elective subjects at the Dnipro State Technical University (Kamianske) during the first semester of the 2026–2027 academic year.

International Cooperation

The department actively develops international educational and scientific connections. Since 2023, it has participated in the Erasmus+ KA2 project DigiFLEd, "Modernization of University Foreign Language Education Programs through the Introduction of Information Technologies," under the guidance of Prof. Olena Hurko. Within the project, new disciplines in academic writing, digital applications in language and literature teaching, digital games and gamification, as well as digital methods in language teaching have been developed and introduced.

The department has experience in participating in the international Tempus IV project on multilingual teacher training in universities of Georgia and Ukraine, cooperates with Michel de Montaigne University Bordeaux 3, and its students participate in Erasmus+ programs, summer courses at the University of Sussex, and academic mobility at the universities of Wrocław and Seville. For example, in the 2023–2024 academic year, students Elvira Sennyk and Vladyslava Kravchenko studied at the University of Bordeaux under a Master's degree program.

Head of the Department, Associate Professor Nataliia Safonova participates in the Access Scholarship Programme, implemented by the Regional English Language Office at the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine. The program aims to develop English-language communication skills, deepen knowledge of U.S. history and culture, and introduce modern English language teaching methodologies.

Starting in 2024, students of the Department of English Philology have had the opportunity to study in summer courses at the University of Sussex (Falmer, West Sussex, United Kingdom). In 2025, female students Mariia Kuzminykh and Polina Popova completed the course "British Cinema" at the University of Sussex, for which they received corresponding certificates.

In the 2023–2024 academic year, 3rd-year student Anastasiia Cheviuk participated in the Erasmus+ program, within which she studied for one semester at the Department of English Philology at the University of Wrocław, Poland, where she was able not only to deepen her professional knowledge but also to get acquainted with a new educational system, Polish culture, and people from various countries.

As part of the Erasmus+ academic mobility program (KA171), students of the Department of English Philology, Olesia Tykhomyrova and Anastasiia Shylo, studied at the Faculty of Philology at the University of Seville, Spain, during the 2025–2026 academic year, where they mastered the English language, generative grammar, and specific philological subjects. Together with students from the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Ukraine, and other European countries, they exchanged experiences, got acquainted with cultural traditions, and overcame language barriers in an informal setting. Academic mobility at the University of Seville became not just an educational stage, but a big push for personal and professional growth that broadened their worldview and provided valuable international communication experience.

In 2025 and 2026, students of the department actively participated in the department's international scientific projects. For example, on December 11 and 12, the Department of English Philology and the Department of Romano-Germanic Philology of Oles Honchar DNU (Assoc. Prof. S.Yu. Honsalies-Munis, 4th-year student Mariia Kuzminykh, lecturer Akos Bitter, instructor Viktor Kushchev) participated in an international workshop titled "War Trauma in Literature: Herta Müller’s Atemschaukel (The Hunger Angel)" at the Polytechnic University of Timișoara (Universitatea Politehnica Timișoara), Timișoara, Romania. The workshop took place in a hybrid format, with participants including the West University of Timișoara, Lenau Lyceum Timișoara, the University of Szeged, Oles Honchar Dnipro National University, Kryvyi Rih State Pedagogical University, and others.
