Protecting the Ecological State of the Dnipro River

The scientists of Oles Honchar Dnipro National University, together with the specialists from the Municipal Company “Environmental Monitoring Center” of the Dnipro Regional Council, regularly participate in monitoring the state of water resources in our region. The measuring of these indicators is important for monitoring of water quality that is especially essential during the war and the existing problems with water supply in the southern part of Ukraine, because pure water is a guarantee of public health. Data collection and interpretation allows us to provide an integrated assessment of the Dnipro water status and assess risks to the population and biota.

The vice-rector for scientific work of DNU, PhD in biology, hydrobiologist Oleh Marenkov, says:

- The monitoring of the aquatic environment is carried out in the mode of constant determination of certain indicators and is closely related to the diploma and dissertation research of biology and ecology students and postgraduate students of DNU.

The stationary station for surface water quality analysis, which determines the main hydrochemical parameters of the Dnipro River, operates under a memorandum of cooperation between the Environmental Monitoring Center of the Dnipro Regional Council and Oles Honchar Dnipro National University, on the territory of the Aquarium educational and scientific complex of the Dnipro National University on Monastyrskyi Island.

In future, we plan to expand cooperation between science and government officials for integrated solution of urgent ecological problems, implementation of joint research, search for international grants and projects, and to develop programs to restore ecosystems affected by the hostilities.
