In the UA Ruhr Laboratories: Researchers of DNU at the Summer School „Blue Future”

The Summer School „Blue Future” – focused on polluted areas, the renaturation of water bodies, and water purification – is currently underway in Germany, featuring a group of researchers, PhD students, and undergraduates from the Faculties of Biology & Ecology and Chemistry at DNU.

This five-day event is a part of the joint UA Ruhr (Alliance of Ruhr Universities) project „DniProNRW – Science Bridge“ supported by the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration and the Ministry of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The team of DNU spent the first two days of the summer school „Blue Future” at the laboratories of their partner institution, the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE). Specifically, the lecture sessions took place at the RESIST Collaborative Research Center. German colleagues presented the activities of the Center and conducted laboratory tours for the visiting researchers.

On the first day, representatives of DNU, accompanied by Dr. Daniel Grabner, toured the modern equipment at the Hydroecology Laboratory. Milen Nache, a staff member at the Center, presented the Aquatic Ecosystems Research Laboratory. Afterward, the guests from Ukraine were introduced to the latest approaches in scientific research within the fields of molecular biology, bioinformatics, genetics, and hydroecology. They attended a special lecture by Arne Beermann on metabarcoding and environmental DNA (eDNA).

The following day, the DNU delegation visited the algae laboratory. Professor Bank Beszteri showcased a large repository housing various algae cultures used for diverse purposes—including education, scientific research, and aquaculture development.

Scientists of DNU also explored technological tools that use optical instruments to capture images of large quantities of microscopic algae.

Following intensive laboratory sessions in Essen, the activities of summer school continued at the renaturalized floodplains of the Emscher River, a right-bank tributary of the Rhine.
