On September 8, Oles Honchar Dnipro National University (DNU) received a charitable donation from two German partner universities within the UA Ruhr Alliance: Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) and the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE).
The total value of the equipment added to the assets of university is nearly 16,000 euros. This humanitarian aid is a part of the international “DniPRONrw“ project, established to foster solidarity and support from Germany for universities in Dnipro region amidst the ongoing war against Ukraine and its impact on higher education and society. Initiated by the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration and supported by the Ministry of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia (MKW NRW), the project plays a vital role in establishing practical regional ties. Its primary objective is to facilitate the restoration and development of academic and scientific partnerships between German federal states and the Dnipropetrovsk region.

Specifically, to support the successful conduct of the educational process, DNU received computer, network, and audiovisual equipment (desktop PCs, all-in-one computers, multi-port network switches with power supplies, and an Epson projector). Additionally, a shipment of laboratory and scientific equipment arrived from the international partners; this will enhance the technical infrastructure of the Faculty of Biology and Ecology and the Faculty of Chemistry, as well as the Research Institute of Biology and the Research Institute of Chemistry and Geology. As noted by Professor Oleh Marenkov, Vice-Rector for Research, this acquisition is particularly important for the practical training of students in biology, ecology, biotechnology, and chemistry programs. Overall, it will expand opportunities for students to work with research equipment, master modern methods of observation, measurement, and analysis, and engage in research projects during their studies.

Specifically, the university has received a Zeiss Axiovert 135 inverted fluorescence microscope, two binocular laboratory microscopes, a Hameg oscilloscope, and two high-precision Piezosysteme Jena nanopositioners. The microscopy equipment will be used during classes, for student qualification projects, in the training of PhD students, and for scientific research. It will enhance capabilities for studying cells, tissues, microorganisms, aquatic organisms, and other biological specimens. The laboratory signal generator, oscilloscope, and nanopositioners will enable precise biophysical and interdisciplinary experiments, the study of electrical signals, work with sensors and micromechanical systems, and the controlled positioning of research samples.

The Faculty of Chemistry and the Research Institute of Chemistry and Geology have received a large set of specialized laboratory glassware—comprising over 40 different items in total. The inventory includes: chemical glassware (single- and three-neck round-bottom flasks of various volumes, flasks for work in a nitrogen atmosphere, quartz and glass tubes, crystallizing dishes, vacuum Dewar flasks, a desiccator, and fritted vessels such as crucibles, dishes, and mortars), as well as condensers, laboratory stands, clamps, stopcocks, ground-glass joints, and components for vacuum and chemical setups. This equipment will be used for organic and inorganic synthesis, distillation, evaporation, crystallization, and substance purification; for operations under vacuum or in an inert atmosphere; and for sample preparation and the assembly of experimental laboratory setups.

In May, as part of our German-Ukrainian “DniPRONrw” project, DNU received similar charitable aid from the team at the Alliance’s central institution—Ruhr University Bochum. At that time, our German colleagues donated 15 sets of modern charging stations to help ensure our energy independence.

In July of last year, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between DNU and three member universities of the University Alliance Ruhr (Ruhr University Bochum, TU Dortmund University, and the University of Duisburg-Essen), aimed at fostering a constructive institutional partnership. Reliable support from Germany enables our university to successfully continue its mission: teaching, conducting research, and advancing Ukrainian science.
