Professor Serhii Plokhy – Honorary Doctor of DNU

On September 15, at a solemn meeting of the Academic Council of Oles Honchar Dnipro National University, the world-famous historian Serhii Plokhy, a graduate of Alma mater, received the title of “Honorary Doctor of DNU”. The appropriate attributes – the robe and diploma of Honorary Doctor of DNU, as well as the highest university award – the medal “For Faithful Service to DNU” – were personally presented to Serhii Plokhy at the ceremony by the rector, Professor Sergiy Okovytyy, and the head of the Academic Council, Professor Iryna Popova.

Serhii Plokhy received the recognition of the academic community for his outstanding contribution to protecting the interests of Ukraine in the world community, building the international image and authority of DNU. Serhii Plokhy – Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor – a well-known Ukrainian and American scientist – one of the leading experts in the history of Ukraine and Eastern Europe.

Today, Serhii Plokhy is one of the world's leading historians, the author of dozens of fundamental monographs devoted to the history of Ukraine, Eastern Europe and international relations. His books are published by leading university publishing houses, translated into many languages, and shape the world community's perception of Ukraine, its past and present.

It is especially important to emphasize: at a time when Ukraine is fighting for freedom and its place in the world, it is Serhii Plokhi's voice that is heard in the world's leading academic and media circles. His scientific and civic position is for us an example of the responsibility of a scientist and intellectual to society.

Therefore, awarding Serhii Mykolayovych Plokhi the title of Honorary Doctor of Oles Honchar Dnipro National University is not only a tribute to his personal merits. This is a recognition of the role of our university in the formation of world-class scientists; it is a sign of pride for our graduate; This is an opportunity to show once again that Dnipro National University is part of the great world academic tradition, - noted Serhii Ivanovych.

In particular, Serhii Plokhy began his professional career as a scholar-researcher of the history of Ukraine at the Faculty of History of our university, where he entered in 1975. There, under the guidance of professors Yuriy Mytsyk and Mykola Kovalsky, he began researching Latin-language sources about the Liberation War of the Ukrainian people. In 1980, after graduating from the university, he entered postgraduate study at the Department of Historiography and Source Studies.

In 1982, Serhii Plokhy defended his candidate's thesis, in 1990 - his doctoral thesis. From 1983 to 1992, he worked at our university: as a lecturer, professor, head of the Department of World History, director of the University History Museum, and dean for work with international students. It was at our university that he initiated a new scientific direction in the study of the history of Mennonites and Germans in Ukraine.

 

His scientific path then led him through the Institute of Archaeography and Source Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Alberta, where he held the position of professor and program director. And, finally, from 2003, to Harvard University, where Serhii Plokhy worked as a professor.

 

From 2013 to 2025, Serhii Plokhy headed the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University - the most influential scientific center of Ukrainian studies in the world. Recently, in 2025, his scientific and cultural contribution was recognized with an honorary doctorate from Oxford University. Also this year, Professor Serhii Plokhy became a foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in the Department of History, Philosophy and Law.
