Ukraine-Germany: Strengthening International Cooperation

Oles Honchar Dnipro National University continues to develop confidently international partnerships with leading educational institutions in Germany. The next step in this direction was the visit of the DNU delegation to the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW).

In particular, in early July, in order to establish fruitful academic and scientific exchanges, Rector Sergiy Okovytyy, Vice-Rector for Scientific and Pedagogical Work in the Field of International Cooperation Viktor Gasso, Head of the Department of Romance and Germanic Philology Inga Kirkovska, and other representatives of the Alma mater visited Germany.

During the trip, dozens of meaningful meetings were held with the heads of faculties, institutes, and scientific laboratories of the Ruhr University Alliance (UA Ruhr). Such a visit was made possible within the framework of the international project “DniPRONrw”, initiated by the head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration Serhiy Lysak and supported by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia (MKW NRW). Created with the aim of solidarity and support by Germany of the universities of the Dnipro region in view of the ongoing war, this project opens up broad prospects for the development of our academic potential.

Thus, the first strategic step towards strengthening regional German-Ukrainian ties was the conclusion of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Dnipro Higher Education Institutions and the Alliance of Ruhr Universities.

The ceremony of signing the official document took place at the central university of the Alliance – Ruhr University in the city of Bochum.

The important agreement was solemnly signed by the rector of Oles Honchar Dnipro National University, Professor Sergiy Okovytyy and the vice-rector for scientific and pedagogical work of the Ukrainian State University of Science and Technology, Professor Oleksandr Zaychuk – from the Ukrainian side, and the rectors of the three partner HEIs of the Ruhr Alliance: Professor Dr. Martin Paul (Ruhr University of Bochum), Professor Dr. Manfred Bayer (Technical University of Dortmund) and Professor Dr. Barbara Albert (University of Duisburg-Essen) – from the German side.

During visits to the cities of Bochum, Dortmund and Essen, the DNU team managed to get acquainted with the main areas of educational and scientific work of the Alliance universities. Thus, at Ruhr University, excursions were held to the laboratories of the biological and mechanical faculties. In particular, successful working meetings were held with the Dean of the Faculty of Biology, Professor Stefan Wiese, and the Head of the Department of Cellular Morphology and Molecular Neurobiology, Skadi Heinzelmann, as well as the Head of the Department of Applied Laser Technologies of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Professor, Habilitation Doctor Andreas Ostendorf.


The program of the visit to the university in Bochum also included the official opening of the summer linguistic school for educators from Kyiv, Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk and Kharkiv.

During the visit to the University of Duisburg-Essen, the DNU delegation led by rector Sergiy Okovytyy visited the Faculty of Chemistry. For the guests from Ukraine, the German partners prepared a tour of the laboratories of the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, where they could see their scientific work on electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction.

At the Technical University of Dortmund, DNU representatives visited the Faculty of Economics, where they talked with Professor Manuel Wische on the topic of digital transformation of educational institutions.
