Guest Lectures for Alma mater

On the initiative and organizational efforts of the Faculty of Social Sciences and International Relations, a series of guest lectures were held for students and scientific and pedagogical workers of DNU by graduates Olga Zaitseva-Herz and Marina Shevtsova.

Dr. Olga Zaitseva-Herz is a Doctor of Philosophy in ethnomusicology, a researcher at the Peter and Doris Kule Folklore Centre at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada, and a performer of the famous musical group “ZAITSA”.

 

For the second time, she agreed to hold a series of guest lectures for students and teachers of Alma mater on the topic “Culture of the Ukrainian Diaspora in Canada: Past and Present” The educational events, which were held online in Ukrainian, were attended by 70 participants representing the Faculty of Social Sciences and International Relations, the Faculty of History, the Faculty of Law, and the Faculty of Economics. The lectures were accompanied by informative slides, which presented interesting archival documents, photographs, sheet music, etc.

 

The lectures addressed the issues of emigration of residents of Galicia and Bukovina and their adaptation in Canada at the end of the 19th century, the preservation of Ukrainian identity by immigrants and their descendants, the influence of the political context on the culture of the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada, and the influence of Ukrainian musical heritage on the formation of modern musical styles (country, folk, pop) in North America.

 

Also, a series of guest lectures on the topic “Challenges of Democracy in Central and Eastern Europe” was of great interest among the participants, which was offered by Dr. Maryna Shevtsova, Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science, Senior Research Fellow at Leuven International and European Studies (LINES) at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium (KU Leuven, Belgium). These online educational events in Ukrainian were attended by 107 participants – representatives of the Faculty of Social Sciences and International Relations, the Faculty of History, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, the Faculty of Physics and Engineering, as well as the Faculty of Medical Technologies for Diagnostics and Rehabilitation, the Faculty of Mass Communication Systems and Media, the Faculty of Psychology and Special Education, the Faculty of Economics, and the Faculty of Ukrainian and Foreign Languages and Art History.

 

At the end of the educational events, all participants received certificates.
