Educational and Teaching Activities
For more than half a century, Department of Foreign Literature has been an important force in the academic study of literature and a key part of a classical education on the field of philology.
The Department teaches the majority of undergraduate students of the Faculty, graduates more than 100 majors every year, and trains PhDs in Foreign Literature and Comparative Literature.
Today the Department represents a wide variety of scholarly and critical approaches to the study of European and American literature and literary history.
The Department offers an array of major and minor courses for undergraduates and PhD students, i.e.: Introduction to Ancient Greek and Roman Literature, History of European Literature, History of American Literature, Literary Translation: Theory and Practice, Literary Theory, History of Literary Theory and Criticism, Modern World Literature: Authors, Texts, Tendencies, Be the British/Think like Americans. National Identity in Language and Literature, etc.
The Department of Foreign Literature offers Bachelor’s study programmes in:

The internship program at the Dnipro Regional Universal Scientific Library made it possible to identify effective ways of integrating students’ literary studies training with applied translation and information-analytical skills. Students completed more than 100 English-language translations of reviews and critiques of scholarly and popular science publications for the library’s official web portal, which have been published on the website of the Dnipro Regional Universal Scientific Library (under the section “About Our Beloved Ukraine”), which helps disseminate information about the achievements of Ukrainian philological science in the international information space and provides graduates with the opportunity to find fulfilment in the modern job market as translator-analysts, editors, and specialists in Public/Digital Humanities. Participants are invited to write reviews of new foreign literary releases for the library’s website, create educational media content dedicated to literary anniversaries for the library’s official Facebook page and record audio clips of children’s books and excerpts from world and Ukrainian poetry classics in English, French, and German.
Since 2025, the faculty’s research has focused on the topic “National and Transnational in the Context of Literature”. Under the guidance of specialists from the Department of Foreign Literature, a doctoral dissertation by O. Tupakhina (advisor: Prof. T. M. Potnitseva), candidate dissertations by A. K. Tityuk (advisor: Prof. V. A. Gusev), T. V. Kirpita (advisor: Prof. L. I. Skuratovska), and N. S. Styrnik (advisor: Assoc. Prof. O. V. Levchenko) were defended, as well as a dissertation by Y. Ivleva for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (advisor: Prof. O. L. Kalashnikova). In August 2026, Yelizaveta Kondrashova
successfully defended her dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, dedicated to the work of the outstanding 20th-century English-language poet Dylan Thomas (advisor: Prof. T. M. Potnitseva).
The results of this research are presented at the annual All-Ukrainian conferences “Philological Readings in Memory of N. S. Shreider,” which have been held since 2003 (“The Word as a Fact and Factor in Literature,” “Capturing Sound: Emotional and Semantic Factors in Literary Texts,” “Literature as a Semiotic Resource of Culture,” “Literature in Detail: A Cultural Studies Perspective,” “The National and the Transnational in the Context of Literature,” “History as Literature”) and enable the involvement of renowned scholars from Ukraine and abroad in discussions of current issues in literary studies (experts from Brazil, Poland, Bulgaria, France, the Czech Republic, and Montenegro). As part of the All-Ukrainian Scientific Conference “The Word as a Fact and Factor of Literature” (2021), a roundtable discussion titled “Poetry as an Achievement in Translation: Between Instrumentalism and Hermeneutics,” featuring translator S. Burdzhak-Jones (U.S. Department of State), which facilitated an exchange of experiences regarding the role of readers’ expectations in the reception of translated poetry.
The academic staff of the Department has started publishing a number of collective monographs: "Literature Through the Looking Glass of Literature" (2018), "Fictionality in Literature: Fiction of Reality/Reality of Fiction" (2021), "The Word as Fact and Factor of Literature" (2022). Department science clubs successfully introduce students to a variety of themes: "Text and Context: Literary Classics of the 19th and 20th Centuries in the Socio/Cultural Area", “Current Issues in the Study of German-Language Literature”, "In Search of Scientific Metalanguage. Basics of Intermedial Studies of Cultural Artifacts".
Theses and academic papers based on the materials of student reports at International, All-Ukrainian and regional scientific conferences are published.
The representatives of the department support and promote the development of gifted students and schoolchildren in the Dnipro region. Associate Professors O.V. Levchenko, T.E. Pichugina, N.G. Veligina oversee the “Foreign Literature” section of the “Literary Studies, Folklore, and Art History” Department at the Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and were recognized with a letter of appreciation for providing academic guidance on the winning projects of the second (regional) stage of the All-Ukrainian Competition for the Defense of Research Projects of the Junior Academy of Sciences during the 2022–2023 academic year.
The Foreign Literature Department staff members actively collaborate with fellow philologists from Poland (Marta Kowal, Professor at the University of Gdańsk), Germany (Professor Yevheniia Voloshchuk of the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt), and Brazil (Professor Svitlana Kryvoruchko, an international visiting researcher at the Institute of the State University of the Central-West – UNICENTRO). As part of the collaboration between the Faculty of Ukrainian and Foreign Philology and Art History at Oles Honchar Dnipro National University and the Polish foundation “Bieszczady-Art,” Associate
Professors O.V. Maksyutenko, S.O. Vatchenko, and N.G. Veligina participated in the international projects “Bieszczady-2025” and “Bieszczady-2026” (in the city of Meszkovice). In the summer of 2023, Associate Professor T.E. Pichugina visited Germany and completed a research internship under the supervision of Professor Almut Gille on the topic “The Contemporary German-Language Novel: Authors, Texts, Trends” at the Institute of German and Dutch Philology at the Free University of Berlin, which took place as part of the STIBET program with financial support from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
Graduate students take part in international academic mobility programs. During 2022–2023 academic year, Yelizaveta Kondrasheva (supervised by Prof. T.M. Potnitseva) participated in an international internship program titled “Visiting Research Student within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences” at Swansea University (Wales, United Kingdom), where she had the opportunity to further her research and present the results of her academic work on the poetry of Dylan Thomas.
From September 2023 through June 2024, students Vladislava Kravchenko and Elvira Senik participated in the EU’s Erasmus+ international student exchange program at the University of Bordeaux III Michel de Montaigne.
Under the guidance of Associate Professor T.E. Pichugina, Master’s student Anastasia Mukhina won the All-Ukrainian Competition of Student Research Papers in the field of “Romance Languages, Methods of Teaching Romance and Germanic Languages, and Romance and Germanic Literatures,” receiving a first-degree diploma in 2020.
Sofia Blonska is a Verkhovna Rada scholarship recipient for the 2025–2026 academic year and the President of Ukraine’s Academic Scholarship in September 2026.
As part of the internal academic mobility program under the cooperation agreement signed with Dnipro State Technical University (Kam’yanske), students Viktoria Kutsenko and Sofiia Blonska enrolled in the elective course “Business English” at the partner institution during the first semester of the 2026–2027 academic year.
