Educational and Teaching Activities

For more than half a century, Department of Foreign Literature has been an important force in the academic study of literature and a key part of a classical education on the field of philology.

The Department teaches the majority of undergraduate students of the Faculty, graduates more than 100 majors every year, and trains PhDs in Foreign Literature and Comparative Literature.

Today the Department represents a wide variety of scholarly and critical approaches to the study of European and American literature and literary history.

The Department offers an array of major and minor courses for undergraduates and PhD students, i.e.: Introduction to Ancient Greek and Roman Literature, History of European Literature, History of American Literature, Literary Translation: Theory and Practice, Literary Theory, History of Literary Theory and Criticism, Modern World Literature: Authors, Texts, Tendencies, Be the British/Think like Americans. National Identity in Language and Literature, etc.

The Department of Foreign Literature offers Bachelor’s study programmes in:

– В11.055 French and English languages and literatures
– А4.021 Secondary education: English language and literature

The Department of Foreign Literature provides training to gain Master’s degree in:

Scientific Activity of the Department

Scientific activity is carried out on the topic “National and Transnational in the Context of Literature”.

The results of scientific works are made public at the annual All-Ukrainian scientific conferences "Philological Readings in Memory of N.S. Shreider" and published in the collection of scientific works "From Baroque to Postmodernism: Contexts of the Epoch”.

The academic staff of the Department has started publishing a number of collective monographs: "Literature Through the Looking Glass of Literature" (2018), "Fictionality in Literature: Fiction of Reality/Reality of Fiction" (2021), "The Word as Fact and Factor of Literature" (2022). Department science clubs successfully introduce students to a variety of themes: "Actual Problems of Studying English literature of the Renaissance", "Text and Context: Literary Classics of the 19th and 20th Centuries in the Socio/Cultural Area", "In Search of Scientific Metalanguage. Basics of Intermedial Studies of Cultural Artifacts". Theses and academic papers based on the materials of student reports at International, All-Ukrainian and regional scientific conferences are published.

International Cooperation

The Foreign Literature Department staff members are involved in international cooperation and take part in the work of Internet conferences (Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Great Britain, the USA, Portugal, Japan), foreign internships (Collegium Civitas University in Warsaw, Freie Universität Berlin). The department maintains scientific contacts with fellow philologists from Poland (Professor Marta Kowal, University of Wrocław), Germany (Professor Ievgeniia Voloshchuk, European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder).

Stakeholder Collaboration

The Department cooperates with stakeholders: Olga Kalashnikova, Head of the Department of Humanitarian Training, Philosophy and Customs Identification of Cultural Values, University of Customs and Finance, Tetyana Filat, Head of the Department of Language Training of Dnipro State Medical University, Vadym Kholodkov, Headmaster of the Specialized School No. 16 of the Dnipro City Council.
